Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Aug 6, 2013: Prof M B Puranik, Divisional Working President of Vishwa Hindu Parishat alleged that cattle smuggling cases as well as the unauthorized abattoirs have seen a rise ever since the Congress Government came to power in the state.

He also said that the Congress government has rejected the Anti Cow Slaughter Bill introduced by the BJP government and has continued the law of 1964. Even this law  restricts the slaughtering of a calf and a milking cow unless the veterinary doctor gives the certificate of ‘Fit to Transport’.

Puranik said that there were 4,12,000 cows in the state but according to the 2012-13 report at present there are only 57,508 cows.

VHP and Bhajarangdal have   opposed  cow slaughter since decades. Though there are  many cattle theft cases in the district, hardly a few of them have been reported. “Earlier we used to catch  people while smuggling  cows, but later the police officials have warned not to take law into  hands, but  instead inform them. But even after informing the police, they  have stopped only one or two cattle smuggling  vehicles out of 10, he said.

Recalling the communal tension that sparked  in 1998 after a cattle slaughter incident, Puranik said if such incidents should not be repeated the police department need to take stern measures.

Jagadish Shenava, district Working President of VHP said that the government must fulfill  four demands including provision of  a compensation of Rs 50,000 for each cow  that is stolen, providing license to purchase a gun for the protection of  cows, forming a special police squad at the district level to prevent cattle thefts  and establishment of ‘Grama-Gorakshashala’ involving locals for the protection of the cows.

People  whose cows have been stolen, namely Mahadevi from Suratkal, Vidyadhar Hegde from Mucchuru, Chandrahas and Antony D’Souza from Jeppinamogaru, Ganesh Mayya from KC Road of Ullal, Shekar Shetty, Sharath Mudipu, Devdas Manjanady and others shared their grief due to loss of their cows which were their only source of  income.

Dinesh Pai, VHP Divisional Goraksha Pramuk, Gopal Kutthar, VHP Secretary, Bhujang Kulal, district convener, Bhajarangdal and Pradeep Pumpwell, district Goraksha Chief of Bhajarangdal were present.
