Mangalore, Oct 11 2011: Kamala Ramappa, the wife of late Kankanady Jappinamogeru Ramappa, the owner of the Rajkamal Restaurant and Kankanady Restaurant in Mangalore, died at the age of 82 on Oct 11 Tuesday.

The Ramappa couple was extremely significant in the Billawa community, and Mrs. Ramappa was an active member of the Brahma Shri Narayana Guru Seva Samithi to which she had even donated land.

Mr. Ramappa was a great philanthropist who had served the community selflessly. Mrs. Ramappa supported every move made by her husband, including his organizations of Kambalas, Bhoota kolas, and Brahmakalashotsavas. The couple contributed generously to various causes and financed the studies of several children.

Mrs. Ramappa also played host to a number of political leaders, including late CM R. Gundu Rao at her houses. She insisted on serving food to all the top Congress leaders who visited her.

The couple was closely associated with B. Janardhana Poojary, the former union minister and former MP, who was among the first to pay his final respects when he heard of her death. Mrs. Ramappa was known as an Annapurneshwari to those who enjoyed meals at her house.

Mr. Ramappa, affectionately referred to as Rampanna, was unfairly made the subject of several jokes in which he was portrayed as a miserly and foolish person, while in reality he was generous, disciplined, and intelligent. Senior citizens still remember how he generously served food to the poor and the needy in his restaurants and imposed fines on diners who wasted food or rose without finishing all the food served on their banana leaf plates.

In short, the couple was loved for their hospitality and generosity.
