Mangalore, March 2: The Shri Gokarnanatha Kshethra of Kudroli on Wednesday received a beautiful new silver chariot, which was offered to the temple ritualistically in the presence of Janardhan Poojary, the former minister, and several priests.
The silver chariot was formally dedicated to the temple on the vrishaba lagnam muhurta at 12:42 p.m., on the occasion of Maha Shivarathri and in the midst of the annual festival of the temple.
The silver chariot was donated to the temple by Ramesh Kumar, Urmila Ramesh Kumar, and their family and was brought to the temple on Feb 18. The chariot, which weighs 4,500kgs, is 18.5ft tall and 8.5m in diameter. The craftsmen who manufactured this chariot used 225kgs of silver. The chariot, which bears delicate carvings all over it, is now one of the highlights of this temple, which attracts a large number of devotees.
The idol of Lord Shiva was later placed ceremoniously on the silver chariot, followed by several rituals such as ratha pooja, ratharohana, ratha bali, and mangalarathi.
Harikrishna Bantwal, the spokesperson of Gokarnatheswara Kshetra, said that the Ramesh Kumar family has donated this chariot to the temple and that the management of the temple has now become its custodian.
