Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Nov 18, 2025: In a joint operation of Railway Protection Forces (RPF) of Southern and Konkan Railway, a four-member gang that had stolen jewellery worth ₹50 lakh from a passenger on MGR Chennai Central-Mangaluru Central Mail on November 14 was arrested at Madgaon the same day.

A couple travelling on Train 12601 from Chennai to Quilandi in a second AC coach on November 14 reported the theft of gold jewellery from a locked trolley bag. While the Government Railway Police, Kozhikode, registered a case, the RPF coordinated the investigation under the supervision of Palakkad Divisional Security Commissioner A. Navin Prasath and Railway Superintendent of Police Shahansha.

Theft

Initial clues from victims, the TTE, and the bedroll staff indicated the involvement of a skilled zip-operating inter-State gang. Suspicious behaviour of Hindi-speaking passengers in HA1 coach led to immediate travel chart and PNR scrutiny.

Ticket analysis revealed multiple coordinated bookings made using fake mobile numbers. Additional sleeper-class bookings were used strategically for concealed movement. Verification using RPF Prabal Data and Console checks established that the pattern matched the activities of the ‘Haryana gang’, known for similar train theft operations.

Tracking the accused

The team tracked the movement of the accused through mobile phones and booked tickets and found that they had reached Surathkal near Mangaluru. Southern Railway Chief Security Commissioner Arul Jyoti alerted his KRCL counterpart Abhishek Kumar and established coordination.

RPF Inspector at Udupi P.V. Madhusudhan and head constable Vishram Desai who began tracking the accused found that one of the accused had jumped into the first general coach of Train No. 12620 Mangaluru Central-Mumbai LTT Matsyagandha Express at Surathkal on November 14 while the remaining accused had boarded the last general coach.

Teams formed

The message was passed to RPF Madgaon, where Assistant Security Commissioner Jubir Khan Pathan formed teams and apprehended four accused persons. The personnel were also able to recover jewellery worth about ₹50 lakh, ₹34,500 in cash, two pocket cutters, and four mobile phones from the accused.

RPF, KRCL handed over the accused to RPF, Southern Railway, on Saturday, November 15, in Mangaluru.

RPF gave the names of the arrested accused as Rajesh, 42, Dilbag, 62, Manoj Kumar, 36 and Jitendar, 45, all from Hissar district in Haryana.
