Chhattisgarh, Apr 17, 2026: Police have registered an FIR against Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal and several others following a deadly blast at the company’s power plant in Sakti district that killed 20 workers.
The explosion occurred on April 14 at the Vedanta plant in Singhitarai village after a high-pressure steam pipeline connected to the boiler burst, causing severe burn injuries to workers. While 20 people lost their lives, 16 others sustained injuries.
According to Superintendent of Police Prafull Thakur, the case has been filed at Dabhra police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those related to causing death by negligence and negligent handling of machinery.
“Eight to ten individuals, including Anil Agarwal, have been named in the FIR. More names may be added as the investigation progresses,” he said.
Authorities have launched a detailed probe into the incident. Reports from post-mortem examinations, forensic analysis, and the industrial health and safety department are awaited. A technical team has also been formed to determine the exact cause of the blast.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress has called for strict action against the plant management and demanded a judicial inquiry into the tragedy.
