Puttur, Nov 26, 2025: A major tragedy was averted when a compound wall collapsed onto a newly rented house in Janata Colony, Subhash Nagar, 34 Nekkilady, on the evening of November 24. Thanks to the timely alert given by a mason at the spot, all residents escaped without injuries.
The house had recently been rented to Ilyas from Jabbar Nandavara, and the family had just moved in. Earlier in the day, the family had performed religious rituals, and several relatives had gathered. By evening, preparations for a festive meal were underway in the kitchen.
Behind the rented house, on a higher elevation, is a house belonging to Sushila, who currently lives in Bengaluru. A compound wall was being constructed there for the past 10 days.
Around 5 pm on November 24, the mason noticed that the wall was about to collapse. Realising the danger, he immediately alerted the residents below to vacate the house. Those working in the kitchen rushed outside. Within moments, the compound wall gave way and crashed onto the rented house.
The kitchen was completely destroyed, and the house suffered significant damage. The refrigerator, gas cylinder, stove, and utensils were buried under the debris. Besides Ilyas’s family, several relatives—including 7–8 children—were in the house, many of whom had been in the kitchen preparing food at the time of the incident.
