Mangalore Oct 2: Latha R. Kini, the president of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and Dr. Channappa Gowda, the deputy commissioner, inaugurated prepaid auto booths at KSRTC in Bejai and the Central Railway Station on Oct 2 Sunday.
In his address, Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that these booths are meant to protect passengers from being overcharged by unscrupulous auto rickshaw drivers.
Passengers will have to pay a small fee of Re. 1 per trip as booth maintenance fees, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Channappa Gowda said that this system enables passengers to know the exact amount they have to pay within MCC limits. However, passengers will have to pay 1.5 times the fare displayed on the meter if they are travelling outside MCC limits or if they need an auto between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
Passengers can use helplines 100 or 2220577 to lodge complaints, he added.
The booths were jointly inaugurated by the district administration, the transport department, the Mangalore police, and the Mangalore Association of Travel Agents.
