Police had prior information about home stay attack – JD (S) Nanaiah

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Aug 21, 2012: The police knew well in advance that the Hindu Jagarana Vedike activists were planning to attack Morning Mist Home Stay, alleged JD(S) leader M C Nanaiah.

Addressing reporters at a press conference in Mangalore today, Nanaiah said that state government has records of a telephonic conversation between the activists and the police just before the home stay was attacked. The conversation took place at 6:30 p.m. and the state government has not taken any action in spite of having clear proof that the police knew about the attack, but did nothing to prevent it.

Defending the media for covering the home stay attack, Nanaiah said that the police had no right to register cases against reporters for not informing them about the incident when they had spoken to the activists before they attacked the home stay. If the media had not intervened, the police would have registered false cases of drug abuse and prostitution against the students, he added.

Alleging that the state government supports the attackers, he criticized Home Minister R.Ashoka for failing to keep his word about booking the culprits under the Goonda Act. He also criticized District-in-charge Minister C. T. Ravi for his objectionable statements regarding the birthday party and demanded to know why he did not meet the victims.

Although an ADGP sent by the state government had inspected the venue, investigated the case, and given a public statement that the young people were having a birthday party, C. Manjula, chairperson of the State Women’s Commission, and other government officers are calling it a “rave party,” he said.

Accusing the government of acting under the pressure of pro-Hindu outfits, he said that the government did not even take action against Jagadish Karanth, convener of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike, for defending his organization.

He also said that a public interest litigation (PIL) regarding the case is now in High Court and suggested that a CBI enquiry must be conducted under the guidance of the Supreme Court so that the culprits can be really punished.
