Mangalore, June 7, 2012:PUCL President P. B. D’Sa told reporters at a press meet held in Hotel Woodlands on June 7, Thursday that Joel Vas, a victim of police atrocities, will challenge SI Prakash’s writ petition in high court

.
The Mangalore rural police arrested Joel Vas, his father Justin Vas, and their friend Gangadhar Shetty on June 2, 2010 with regard to a complaint lodged by Fr. Charles Menezes of Shanthi Kiran, Bajjodi. Fr. Menezes had accused the three of threatening to kill him and of abusing him verbally. Allegedly, SI Prakash arrested the three, brought them to the station, forced them to strip, and subjected them to physical torture.

According to Mr. D’Sa, Mr. Shetty withdrew his earlier statements later because some people threatened him and forced him to do so. DCP Ramesh submitted a report to the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), and based on this report, the SHRC directed SI Prakash to pay Rs. 25,000 as compensation to the victims.

But SI Prakash has not yet paid the amount to the victims; instead he has filed a writ petition in court. Mr. D’Sa said that the PUCL will now challenge this petition in high court.
