Mangalore, Dec 3: The Women and Child Welfare Department and Lions Club Gandhinagar organized a district-level meet for the disabled at Town Hall on Dec 3, Friday.


District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar inaugurated the meet and said in his inaugural address that DK has around 17,000 physically and mentally challenged people and that the state government allots Rs. 400 monthly for 10,000 physically challenged and Rs. 1000 monthly for 3,000 mentally challenged people. Speaking about job opportunities for the disabled in the Gram Panchayats, he said that only 50 people could secure jobs owing to the minimum qualification of SSLC.

MLA Yogish Bhat, who was the chief guest of the event, said that the state government has sanctioned Rs. 20 crore for disabled people in its last year’s budget. Vice District Governor Ln. P. Kishore Rao was also the chief guest of this event, in which over 1000 disabled children participated.

The B. G. Educational Charitable Trust distributed wheelchairs and three-wheeler cycles to beneficiaries on this occasion.
