Paris: Robbery Reported at Louvre Museum; Museum Closed for the Day

Paris, Oct 19, 2025: The Louvre Museum in Paris was closed on Saturday following reports of a robbery at the world-famous art institution that houses the Mona Lisa and other priceless artefacts.

France’s Culture Minister Rachida Dati confirmed the incident in a social media post, saying, “A robbery took place this morning at the opening of the Louvre Museum. No injuries reported. I’m on the site with museum staff and police.”

According to news agency AFP, the robbers arrived on a scooter equipped with small chainsaws and used a goods lift to reach the targeted room. They reportedly fled the scene with jewellery, though the exact value of the stolen items is still being assessed.

The museum, which cited “exceptional reasons” for its sudden closure, has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.

It remains unclear how many individuals were involved. A member of the minister’s team told reporters that at least one person entered the museum but did not confirm details of the theft.

Visuals from the site showed barricades erected outside the Louvre and visitors waiting for the museum to reopen. An investigation into the robbery is currently underway.
