Mangalore, Nov 10, 2012 : The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) and the Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike (KKSV) stated that they would intensify their efforts to get justice for Kasturi TV Channel reporter Naveen Soorinje, who has been arrested in connection with the Padil home stay attack.

State PUCL President P. B. D’Sa said that the police need not have arrested the journalist when his anticipatory bail application was pending in court. He accused the police of arresting Naveen only to reduce his chances of getting bail. Stating that the case of dacoity slapped on Soorinje was absurd, he urged authorities concerned to release him immediately and withdraw the false charges against Soorinje.

Urging to public to fight for Naveen Soorinje, he said that Justice M. F. Saldanha, the legal advisor of the vedike, will write a letter to the chief justice of the Karnataka High Court, seeking relief.

PUCL member Ali Hassan said that the PUCL will oppose moral policing and accused the police of arresting Soorinje to cover up their failure to check cases of moral policing.

Voicing his opinion on the issue, KKSV member Alwyn Colaco said that politicians have devised this method to curb constitutional liberties such as freedom and secularism. Accusing the RSS of having hidden agendas of promoting Hindutva in Karnataka, he said that the Sangh Parivar is behind the arrest and the police are mere puppets in the hands of the Sangh Parivar.

Several KKSV and PUCL members were present.
