Mangalore, Oct 6, 2012: Although the call for a statewide bundh on October 6, Saturday to protest against the release of Cauvery water to TN did not impact the city’s daily routine, a number of organizations held jail bharo protests and blocked roads in different parts of Mangalore.
The Cauvery Horata Samithi in association with Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha of DK, Kodava Students Association, and others organized a human chain near Hampankatta Circle and blocked traffic for nearly 2 hours. The police arrested many of the protestors and released them after some time.
Before forming a human chain, the protestors organized rally from Jyothi Circle and shouted slogans against the state governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and the central government.
In his protest address, S. P. Chengappa, president of the Cauvery Horata Samithi, criticized the decision to give a lion’s share of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, adding that this is an injustice to the people of Karnataka, the birthplace of the river. Warning that this will intensify droughts, he said that the people of the coastal region are also facing the threat of Nethravathi diversion. The Cauvery issue is interconnected with the Nethravathi issue, he added.
