Nine Arrested after Shootout in Manipal

Udupi April 21, 2012 : City police have arrested a group of miscreants, suspecting to be targeting some persons in Dasharath Nagar on the outskirts of Manipal on April 20, Friday evening.

 

 

On receiving information that a gang had arrived in a red Toyota Qualis vehicle and was in search of Dasharatha Nagar at Mangala colony, a team of anti-rowdy cell of police led by DySP Dr Prabhudev R Mane arrived in plainclothes and began their operation.

The police gave them chase and at the dead end, the car was stopped and the occupants tried to escape. Some of them are said to have tried to assault the police, who fired three rounds in self-defence. While some of them were arrested, three are said to have escaped.

Based on information provided by the arrested, the police raided different places and arrested a few more. Udupi SP Dr Boralingaiah confirmed that totally nine have been arrested.

The names of the arrested have not been disclosed in the larger interests of investigation. Highly informed sources said that the incident could be connected to a threat received by a woman entrepreneur from Dasharatha Nagar from anti-social elements about a month ago. She had filed a complaint with the police regarding the threat.

In spite of severe pressure from different quarters to withdraw the case, she had not done so. Hence it is suspected that the miscreants might have targeted the woman, her husband and another family friend from Alevoor who assisted in the complaint, said the sources.

The Omni car used by the accused bears a Bangalore south registration number and bears names of  a few temples from around Haleyangadi like Shri Durgaparameshwari, Shri Kshetra Tokur, Shri Mahalingeshwara and also Hai Bhoomi and Panchami. It also bears rental car contact 98455 47891 which creates suspicion about the registration number to be fake. The truth could be revealed only after thorough investigation.
