Nandini plans to expand in Udupi to raise milk production

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 20, 2011: The Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Society Union Ltd has requested land in Udupi to set up a dairy.

Speaking on the occasion of the release of Nandini Bite, a combination of Mysore Pak and chocolate, into the market, President Raviraj Hegde said that the Manipal dairy in Udupi produces around 60,000 litres of milk per day. In spite of the high production, the demand for one lakh litres of milk in the region cannot be met, he added.

Stating that there is no scope for expansion in Manipal, he said that at least 1.5 lakh litres of milk has to be produced in Udupi district per day. He therefore requested the state government to allot at least 10 acres of land in Udupi for the setting up a new dairy.

Responding to the request Dr. V. S. Acharya, the district-in-charge minister, said that the government will consider the expansion of the dairy in Udupi. He also released Nandini Bite into the market.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Hegde said that the demand for Nandini Bite in the market is quite high, owing to which at least 100kgs of Nandini Bite can be produced per day in the Mangalore Dairy.

He also said that the union has launched a scheme for better calf rearing within its jurisdiction and that the aim is to rear at least 5000 calves in the region, which will help increase milk production.
