In the protest, the members of Traders of Association said that the National Highway Authority of India had acquired only 45 metres of land in Kerala, Goa, Kundapur, Kota, Koteshwara and Saligram. Even in Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) and the Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) records, the width of the NH 17 is only 45 meters.

However, the authorities are planning to acquire 60 meters between Nanthur and Talapady to help contractors, they alleged.

The protesters demanded that the national highway road-widening should be limited to 45 meters instead of the proposed 60 meters. Around 100 members of Traders association participated in the rasta roko held as part of the protest.

Almost all the shops located at Thokkottu Junction and surrounding areas remained closed on Tuesday following a protest called by the Traders Association.

Rural Circle Inspector Manjunath Shetty said that elaborate security arrangements have been made in Thokkottu Junction to curb any untoward activities at the time of protest.
