Mulky police arrest Ravi Poojary associate

Mangalore, Nov 22, 2012 :The Mulky police arrested an associate of underworld don Ravi Poojary on Nov 22, Thursday for attempting to kidnap Cyprian D’Souza, a businessman in Mulky.

The arrested Chittaranjan Shetty alias Chittu (35) is a resident of Thokkottu.Cyprian D’Souza, who deals in real estate and timber, was returning home after taking his kids to school on Oct 12, 2011 when four men in a Maruthi Omni stopped his Scorpio near his house. They then got into the Scorpio and threatened him with guns. The businessman, however, opened the Scorpio and fled, shouting for help at the same time. When the local people began arriving on the scene, the four men fled in their Maruthi Omni. Cyprian D’Souza sustained a leg injury.

 

The businessman said that he had been receiving threatening phone calls from a person claiming to be an associate of Ravi Poojary. A day after the kidnap attempt, he received a call from a man who demanded Rs. 2 crore. In 2010, he received another threatening call demanding Rs. 50 lakh. He had lodged complaints against the callers in the Mulky police station.

When interrogated by the police, Chittaranajan said that he and three others had attempted to kidnap the businessman as instructed by Ravi Poojary, who lives abroad. His accomplices are Munchooru Sachu alias Subramanya, Bharatesh alias Bharat, and the driver of the Omni. Subrahmanya has already been arrested by the Bunder police in connection with another case.

Chittaranjan is involved in a case handled by the Konaje police and two cases handled by the Ullal police. Bharathesh in involved in several murder and assault cases filed in the Panambur, Urwa, and Barke police stations.
