Manipal, Jan 21, 2014 : The members of the International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations(IFKCA) staged a demonstration in front of the DC office at Manipal on January 20, Monday condemning the assault on a Christian family of Shirva allegedly by Bhajrangdal activists over a property dispute.

The incident was reported on January 19 when around 50 men suspected to be Bhajrangdal activists including Vishwanath, Suresh, Sushanth, Shiva, Dheeraj Shetty, Vanaja, Nalini, Subraya, Nitin and others had tried to raise a wall across a Panchayat road leading to the residence of Jacintha D’Souza in Shirva.
Jacintha’s daughter Shweeni objected and tried to capture the happening in her camera when the accused reportedly snatched the camera from her, assaulted her and even pulled her clothes. Even her sister Shruthi, brother-in-law Kiran D’Souza and father Philip D’Souza were brutally assaulted, abused and threatened.
The people protesting before the DC office alleged that the police have failed to initiate action against the assailants’ despite a complaint. They also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and Additional SP Santosh Kumar.
Prashanth Jattanna, District President of the Federation. Veronica Carnelio, Shalet D’Souza, Sunil Kabral and several others took part in the protest.
Here it is worth mentioning that the district administration had stayed the construction of a compound wall across the public road in November 2013 itself. The DC had then visited the place and had warned the activists against raising a wall on the approach road to Jacintha D’Souza’s house. The wall constructed then had been removed and the Tahsildar had warned of action if a wall was raised yet again.
