Mangaluru, Sep 13, 2025: Good news for railway passengers — the electrification of the railway line between Mangaluru Central and Subrahmanya Road stations has been completed. From September 15, trains on this route will operate with electric locomotives. This development has also paved the way for the operation of the Vande Bharat Express between Mangaluru and Bengaluru.
Since June, electrification work has been underway on the Subrahmanya Road–Edakumeri–Hassan stretch. Once completed, even the Mangaluru–Bengaluru trains will be fully electrified, opening the possibility of introducing the Vande Bharat Express service on this route. On Wednesday, an electric engine successfully conducted a trial run between Mangaluru and Subrahmanya Road.
Currently, a passenger train departs from Mangaluru Central in the morning, reaches Subrahmanya Road, and returns to Mangaluru. The same service operates in the evening as well, departing Mangaluru, reaching Subrahmanya Road, and returning at night. In addition, there is an afternoon passenger service between Mangaluru Central and Subrahmanya Road. All three of these services will switch to electric locomotives starting September 15.
