Mangaluru, Mar 24, 2026: The Yaksha Kusuma Charitable Trust (R) organized a cultural programme and award ceremony at the Bhagavathi Temple premises in Kodialbail, Mangaluru, celebrating the rich tradition of Yakshagana.

Speaking on the occasion, noted scholar Dr. M. Prabhakar Joshi said that Yakshagana is a unique art form that reflects life itself and carries immense cultural value. He emphasized that no other art form matches the strength and depth of Yakshagana.

Dr. Joshi, who was conferred the prestigious ‘Balkuru Yaksha Kusuma’ award, said he considers himself not a scholar but a dedicated worker in the field. He noted that he has devoted over 60 years to Yakshagana and credited his parents for shaping his life and values. He expressed gratitude to artists, audiences, and supporters, and dedicated the award to them. He also announced that the prize money would be used for publishing his upcoming book.

MLA Vedavyas Kamath, who attended the event, highlighted the importance of preserving culture and traditions. He appreciated the Trust for organizing Yakshagana programmes over the past four years and contributing to cultural awareness.

The award was formally presented to Dr. Joshi in the presence of dignitaries. Senior writer Janardhan Hande recited a poem titled ‘Yaksha Kusuma’ during the programme.

Several prominent personalities, including S.S. Nayak, S.L. Nayak, Dinesh Pai, Dr. Annayya Kulal, and Karunakara Balkur, were present on the dais.

Following the ceremony, a Yakshagana performance was staged by the Nandikeshwara Yakshagana troupe from Kateel, featuring mythological episodes “Draupadi Pratapa” and “Vidyujjihva.” Artist Ashwini Kondadakuli performed the role of Draupadi, along with other noted performers.

The programme was compered by Krishna Bhat.
