Mangalore plane crash - kin unhappy with compensation

Mangalore, September 1: The members of the Mangalore Air Crash Victims’ Families Association expressed their dissatisfaction regarding compensation paid to the victims at an association meeting convened recently. Thirty-four family members of the victims attended this meeting.

Although the members have decided to attend a meeting called by the legal solicitors of Air India (AI) in Mumbai, they have reserved the right to accept or reject the compensation amount. They have decided to study the various factors taken into consideration while fixing the compensation amount and accept the compensation only if it satisfies their expectation. If a majority of the victims’ family members feel that the compensation amount is unacceptable, they will engage a foreign law firm to help them get higher compensation by mediating with insurance companies.

Abdul Basheer of Jeppu, whose brother Abdul Rehman lost his wife and son in the air crash, said that AI’s legal team was giving lesser compensation to women, children, and low-income victims. He says that women victims were given Rs. 30 lakh and children were given Rs. 25 lakh, which the members of the association consider to be unfair.
