Mangalore, Sep 19, 2012: Mangalore is currently giving final touches to its preparation for Ganesh Chathurthi, which will be celebrated on September 19, Wednesday. 


Ganesh Chaturthi comes in the month of Bhaardapada, beginning on the fourth day of the waxing moon. Although celebrated throughout India, it is more popular in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and South India.

In Mangalore, areas such as Car Street, Kankanady, Central Market, and others look especially colorful, with vendors selling a wide range of flowers and vegetables for the festival. Hindus bring home colorful images of Lord Ganesha, install them in their homes, and immerse them in water on September 19. 


People set up colorfully decorated stages and dress the statue of Lord Ganesh grandly with colorful garments and glittering ornaments. Prizes are even offered for the best decorated stage. Devotees also prepare and distribute laddoos and modaks on this day and visit Ganesha temples in large numbers. 


According to popular legends, Lord Ganesha comes to earth on this day to be with his devotees for ten days and clear all obstacles in their lives. Devotees pamper him by preparing and serving his favorite sweets. 


Exhibition of Lord Ganesh Paintings 


The Udupi-based Vraksha Kala Forum organized an exhibition of paintings and clay art based on Lord Ganesh at Gallery Manipal on September 18, Tuesday. Gunavantheshwar Bhat of Canara Bank, sponsor of C.E. Kamath Institute for Artisans Miyar Karkala, inaugurated the exhibition. 


Artists Ravi Hirebettu, Venki Palimar, Srinath Manipal, and others were also present. The public can view this exhibition from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily. 


Temple Gets Ready for Ganeshotsav 


The Uchchila Ganeshothsava Committee has planned to celebrate Ganesh Chathurthi in a very special manner for the first time in Udupi. 


Speaking at a press meet at Uchila Mahalaxmi Temple on September 17, Monday, Committee Secretary Vishwanath said that the samithi has constructed a temporary temple in front of Uchila Mahalaxmi Temple. This temporary temple depicts Tulu art and culture and the special Ganeshotsav will be held to mark the 25th anniversary of the samithi. 


Mr. Vishwanath said that a statue of Lord Ganesha will be installed in the temporary temple and the Ganeshotsava will be held for six days beginning on September 18 and ending with the immersion of the statue on September 24. The Ganeshotsava will cost a total of Rs. 25 lakhs. 


The chief guests of the event will be D. V. Sadananda Gowda, Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, MP Jayaprakash Hegde, MLA Lalaji R. Mendon, District-in-charge Minister Kota Shrinivas Poojary, and others. 


Office bearers of the committee were also present at the press conference.
