Mangalore University to reduce chairmen’s tenure to maximum 3 years

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, December 16, 2011 : Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof. T. C. Shivashankar announced at the Academic Council meeting held yesterday at Mangalore University that the tenure for the Board of Studies (BoS), Board of Examinations (BoE), and chairmen of various departments at the university will be fixed in a bid to change the appointment pattern for chairmen followed at present.

Revealing further details, he said that the new system will be implemented with effect from Jan 1, 2012 and that under this system, the tenure for chairmen of various departments will be limited to two years while that of the chairmen of BoE will be between 1 and 3 years and that of the chairmen of BoS will be 3 years. He added that the new system will enable professors and associate professors with a minimum of 5 years experience to head the BoS chair while professors, associate professors, and assistant professors with a minimum of 5 years experience can head the BoE chair.

He further said that the new system will allow new people to take over as chairmen, unlike the earlier system that allowed a chairman to hold his post for 15 years to 20 years.

The vice chancellor also said that online admission facilities will be made available for all colleges affiliate to the university by the next academic year and that Robosoft Technologies will install the required software in all colleges. This new development means that three major academic processes—admission, approval, and examination—will be computerized.

The VC further said that the university will evolve the school concept by establishing five different schools in five blocks in the campus. The Mass Communication and Journalism course will be shifted to the humanities block in a bid to put all humanities courses under one roof and form the School of Social Sciences. Similarly, the School of Languages, the School of Physical Science, the School of Management Science, and School of Life Science will be created.

The VC also said that Rs. 2.9 crore will be spent in building a new Kannada Study Centre building, and once the building is ready, all the 12 Kannada study chairs will be moved to it. The university will also develop a new examination manual of its own and work regarding this has already begun, he said.

He also announced that the results of the last semester exams will be published on the university’s official website by Dec 30.

Biddappa, the principal of Cauvery College in Gonikoppa, urged the VC to introduce a Kodava diploma course similar to the Tulu course in all colleges affiliated to the university. The VC requested him to submit a proposal on behalf of colleges in Coorg and that the course will be introduced if the Academic Council passes a resolution to that effect.
