Mangalore, Feb 20, 2012: Maha Shivarathri is celebrated on the day before the new moon day of Phalguna, according to the Hindu calendar. Accordingly, it is celebrated today. 


The festival is celebrated in honor of Lord Shiva, one of the chief deities of the Hindu trinity. According to legends, he was married to Goddess Parvathi on this day. Legend also says that he transformed into 12 jyotirlingas and also that he had performed the tandava on this day.

Devotees of Lord Shiva devote the entire night to the worship and service of Lord Shiva. Shiva temples are beautifully adorned and people perform a wide range of pujas, including abhishekas with honey, milk, tender coconut, and others. Devotees believe that, by staying awake, chanting the praises of the lord, and worshipping Lord Shiva on this day, the karma of previous lives get erased. 


On the occasion of Maha Shivarathri, Kudroli Temple organize a wide range pujas, kalashabhisheka and others. Devotees in large numbers flock to Gokarnanatheshwar Temple in Kudroli have been especially decorated for the occasion.
