MU to confer honoris causa on 3 persons at 29th annual convocation

Mangalore, April 28: Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University T. C. Shivashankar Murthy said that the university will confer Honoris Causa on 3 persons at its 29th annual convocation, which is scheduled to be held on April 30, Saturday at the newly constructed Mangala Auditorium in the premises of Mangalore University.



Prof. Murthy also said that Dr. Ajai Kumar Singh (literature and administration), the retired DGP of Karnataka; Bannanje Govindacharya (literature), the senior writer; and D. K. Chowta (literature and social service), the veteran writer, will receive the honorary awards from Governor H. R. Bharadwaj.


He also told reporters at the university will confer 70 doctor of philosophy degrees (16 for arts, 47 for science, 5 for commerce, and 2 for education), 31 gold medals, and 56 cash prizes. The university has 63 ranks (44 in PG, 19 in UG, 12 in Arts, 32 in science and technology, 8 in commerce, 4 in law, 3 in education, and 4 in PG diploma), he added.


The VC also said that 13,833 of the 21,415 candidates who had appeared for the examinations in 2009 – 10 have passed (64.59 percent). Revealing elaborate statistics, he said that 2,451 of the 2,632 candidates who had appeared for the PG exams have passed (93.12 percent), 11,245 of the 18,640 students who had appeared for the UG exams has passed (60.33 percent), and 30 of the 36 students who had appeared for the PG Diploma exams have passed (83.33 percent). Of the candidates who had passed, 4930 of the 13,833 students were boys (35.6 percent) and 8,903 were girls (64.4 percent).


Prof. Murthy said that Dr. V. S. Acharya, the higher education minister, and M. N. Venkatachalaiah, the former chief justice of the Supreme Court of India, will be chief guests of the convocation programme.


The annual convocation will be held for the first time in Mangala Auditorium, which will be inaugurated by Dr. M. Veerappa Moily, the union minister for law and justice, at 12:00 noon.


Prof. K. Chinnappa Gowda, the registrar; Yedapadithaya, the finance officer; and G. P. Shivaram, the head of the department of journalism; were present at the press conference.
