Mangaluru, Feb 18, 2023: The proposal of MESCOM to increase the price of electricity by Rs 1.38 per unit has been opposed by farmers and consumers at a public hearing organised by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) at the DC office auditorium on February 17, Friday.
KERC Chairman P Ravikumar chaired the meeting and heard the opinion expressed by consumers. He said all suggestions will be considered and taking into view the interests of MESCOM, a recommednation would be made to the government.
MESCOM MD Manjappa spoke on the need to increase power tariff. However, a participant in the meeting said there would be no necessity of a tariff hike if the MESCOM manages to collect its arrears.
KN Venkatagiri Rao of Consumer Forum questioned why the MESCOM was increasing tariff instead of measures to collect arrears to the tune of Rs 1,214 crores.
