Mangalore, Feb 16, 2012: As per the directives of the commissioner of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), the civic body conducted a raid on several plastic bag dealers on Feb 15 Wednesday and seized around 800kgs of plastic carry bags.

The dealers raided were Plastic House, Plastic World, and Meenakshi Plastics. Plastic World and Plastic House were found to hold stocks of banned plastic carrier bags for the second time.

However, the largest quantity of banned plastic bags was found in Meenakshi Plastics, which was fined. A two-wheeler containing banned plastic carry bags was also found in front of a plastic shop. Since the owner of the two-wheeler had run away, the MCC team took note of the vehicle’s registration number so that further action could be initiated. The local people said that the vehicle belongs to a plastic carry bag seller.

The raid has proved beyond doubt that banned plastic bags are still being circulated in Mangalore. Some of the plastic bags also bore the name of industries in Bykampady, proving that banned plastic bags are manufactured not only in Mumbai, Daman, and Bangalore, but also in Mangalore.
