Mangalore, April 21: Mayor Praveen Anchan flagged off Civic Tiger, a monitoring vehicle belonging to the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), on the grounds of Town Hall on April 21, Thursday.
In his address, the mayor said that MCC’s attempts to evacuate vendors from the footpaths have been unsuccessful, owing to which the Civic Tiger has been launched to monitor the roads daily and evacuate street vendors.
Speaking about the problem of street vendors at State Bank, Lady Goschen, and Central Market, MCC Commissioner Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash said that Civic Tiger has been launched to check encroachments of footpaths and roadsides by street vendors. A revenue officer and a health officer will be assigned to check the street vendor problem in vulnerable areas, he added.
Stating that the Civic Tiger is among the first experiments introduced by the civic body, the commissioner said that the civic body is determined to overcome the street vendor problem. Although the Civic Tiger is not very comfortable, it will be used till the civic body gets a better vehicle, he added. He also said that more Civic Tiger vehicles will be introduced.
He said that all the items seized from street vendors will be donated to rehabilitation centres, adding that Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh and DC Subodh Yadav have extended their complete support.
Deputy Mayor Geetha Nayak, Corporator Premanand Shetty, Shantha R., and Revenue Officer Meghana Gadkar were also present.
