Mangaluru, Aug 29, 2025: Eric Alexander Ozario, a towering figure in Konkani music and culture, passed away at a private hospital in the city on Friday, August 29. He was 76.
Ozario, who had been ailing for some time, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru, where he breathed his last on Friday. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.
Born on May 18, 1949, in Jeppu, Mangaluru, Ozario dedicated his life to promoting the Konkani language, music, and culture. He was the founder of the cultural organisation Mandd Sobhann, which worked extensively to promote Konkani performing arts. He also established Kalaangann at Shaktinagar, a traditional centre devoted to preserving and teaching Konkani culture.
A passionate advocate for the Konkani language, Ozario played a key role in ensuring Konkani was introduced as an optional subject in schools across Karnataka.
His last rites will be as follows: On Sunday August 31, a Mass at 11.15 am at St. Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia. His mortal remains will be kept for public viewing at Kalaangann from 1 pm to 4.30 pm. Followed by his last rites at 4:30 pm at Boloor crematorium.
