Kasargod, July 16, 2025: In a tragic accident near Kunjattur along the National Highway in Manjeshwar on Tuesday evening, two young migrant labourers lost their lives and another was critically injured after a speeding lorry lost control and rammed into a group of highway workers.

The deceased have been identified as Raj Kumar Mathur (25) from Bihar and Damor Amit Ganpati Bai (23) from Rajasthan. A third labourer, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, sustained serious injuries and has been shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru for urgent medical attention.

Accident

The accident occurred when a lorry traveling from Mannarkkad in Kerala to Mangaluru veered off the road and crashed into the workers who were parked along the roadside and engaged in national highway maintenance activities.

According to police, the victims were employed by a contractor working on the highway development project. Eyewitnesses said the lorry appeared to be out of control moments before it ploughed into the unsuspecting workers.

Raj Kumar and Amit reportedly died on the spot. Their bodies have been moved to the Kasaragod General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

Manjeshwar police have taken the lorry driver into custody and registered a case. An investigation is underway to ascertain whether driver negligence or a mechanical failure led to the fatal mishap.
