Karnataka launches Integrated Command and Control Centre to curb rising man–animal conflict

Mangalore Today News Network

Bengaluru, January 3, 2026: A surge in man–animal conflict incidents across 11 forest divisions has prompted the Karnataka Forest Department to strengthen its technological response, with Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre inaugurating an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) to address the issue.

The ICCC will function as a central hub linking Divisional Command and Control Centres (DCCCs) established in MM Hills, Madikeri, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Mangaluru and Bannerghatta National Park divisions, along with those in the five tiger reserves—Nagarahole, Bandipur, Bhadra, BRT and Kali.

Man-animal conflict

While the DCCCs handle conflict-related complaints at the divisional level and deploy quick reaction teams, the ICCC will focus on monitoring and evaluation. It will issue alerts and track developments across divisions through a single dashboard, enabling the formulation of comprehensive mitigation strategies.

“The ICCC will significantly reduce response time, helping us reach people faster. At the same time, it leverages technology for preventive action,” Mr. Khandre said after inaugurating the centre at Aranya Bhavan in Malleshwaram.

Vigilance measures

The command centre will monitor ground-level operations, including patrol movements through the GPS-based ‘e-Gastu’ application, surveillance of sensitive and conflict-prone areas, and tracking of problem elephants fitted with radio collars.

Following a review meeting with officials, Mr. Khandre said the government was prepared to extend full support for technological upgrades. “Let me know how many thermal cameras, AI-enabled cameras and thermal drones are required. Staff can be redeployed from other divisions if needed. The government’s goal is to eliminate man–animal conflict. Preventing loss of life and injuries is our priority. While accidents may occur, Karnataka should set a benchmark in prevention,” he said.
