Karnataka is the most corrupt state in India – R. Balasubramaniam

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Dec 21, 2011: R. Balasubramaniam, the state convener of India against Corruption and former vigilance director of the Lokayukta, stated that Karnataka is the most corrupt state in India. He was addressing the audience at the inaugural ceremony of Youth against Corruption (YAC), DK district chapter, on Wednesday.

Further, he voiced his opinion that the Lokayukta might be cancelled if Governor H. R. Bharadwaj and CM D. V. Sadananda Gowda cannot reach an agreement regarding the appointment of the new Lokayukta at the earliest possible.

He also said that the Lokayukta has almost lost its power because of the argument between the governor and the chief minister. According to the law, the chief minister has the power to appoint the new Lokayukta after consulting the opposition leader and the high court chief justice, he said.
He also said that the Lokayukta in Karnataka is the best and most powerful among all the 12 states that have the Lokayukta, in spite of which the state was not able to curb corruption.

Voicing his opinions regarding the Lokpal Bill, which is soon to be implemented by the centre, he said that it is a weak bill because the Lokpal will be given power only to supervise cases of corruption while the entire investigation will be done by the CBI. He also stated that none of the political parties dare to give complete power to the CBI.

M. K. Suvrath Kumar, the state coordinator of the YAC, presided over the event.
