Karkala, Mar 12, 2026: A fire that accidentally broke out in a grassland area at Indiranagar in Sanur village limits of Karkala taluk gutted nearly eight acres of land on Thursday. Fire and emergency personnel from Karkala successfully brought the blaze under control after nearly six hours of continuous operation.
The Indiranagar locality has more than 300 houses, and the vacant lands nearby had dense, tall grass growth. The fire reportedly started suddenly and spread rapidly across the grassland, engulfing a large area within minutes, causing panic among residents for some time.
Around 10.30 am, the fire department received information about the incident, following which personnel from the Karkala fire station rushed to the spot. After strenuous efforts and nearly six hours of firefighting, the blaze was completely extinguished by around 4.30 pm. The timely action of the fire personnel helped avert a major disaster.
The firefighting operation was led by Assistant Fire Station Officer Chandrashekar, along with staff members Achyut Karkera and Hariprasad Shettigar, and drivers Jayamoolya, Nityananda, and Basavaraj.
