Mangalore, Sept 24, 2011: Justice S. R. Nayak, the chairman of the State Human Rights Commission, urged the police to curb moral policing across the state.

Addressing a grievance meet held at the DC Court on September 24 Saturday, he suggested that the superintendent of police and the police commissioner should be made responsible for incidents of moral policing across the city.

During the grievance meeting, a person who had lodged a complaint against M. K. Balakrishna for running a medical health clinic without any qualification said that the police and the district health officer have taken no action against the accused.

Several people complained about police atrocities on innocent people in Mangalore, in response to which Mr. Nayak said that police officers who feel that they have the power to assault innocent people just because they are wearing uniforms are unfit to be police officers.

P. B. D’Sa of PUCL referred to the double murder case at Panjimogeru and said that the police have not yet investigated this crime, but have held innocent people and forced them to admit that they are guilty. The police also stand accused of torturing innocent people in connection to this case, as a result of which they were unable to walk for many days.

The members of the Dalit Sangarsh Samithi complained that the police have completed neglected to investigate the brutal murder of a cab driver called Govardhan. Mr. Nayak ordered the police to investigate the above two cases and nab the culprits at the earliest possible.

Regarding the case of Hadiya, a Muslim student at a college in Moodubidri, being not allowed to wear the head scarf in class, Justice Nayak urged her to appeal at the civil court against the ban on head scarf wearing by Muslim girls in colleges.

Seemanth Kumar Singh, the Mangalore police commissioner; Labhu Ram, the superintendent of police; Dr. Channappa Gowda, the deputy commissioner; and Vijayaprakash, the CE of ZP, were also present on this occasion.
