Mangalore, NoV 6, 2012 : IGP (western range) C. H. Prathap Reddy inaugurated a training program on incident response system conducted by the National Institute of Disaster Management, New Delhi in collaboration with DK district administration on Nov 5, Monday.

Speaking on the importance of the response system in dealing with emergencies, the IGP said that the success of any disaster management scheme depends on how fast and how well government units and civic bodies respond to a disaster.
He also spoke of the importance of conducting similar workshops and training sessions in Mangalore, a chemical and petrol zone prone to disasters.
Giving the example of Hurricane Katrina, he said that it showed the world how ill-equipped it was to handle such disasters. It made the US review its response system and create an umbrella unit under the department of homeland security.
Speaking on non calamities such as illegal transportation of cattle, he said that police stations often ended up as cattle sheds because there are neither provisions nor facilities to handle the rescued cattle.
James Payne, a member of the US South West Incident team, spoke on how important it is for India to get trained in incident response.
Mayor Gulzar Banu presided. ADC K. Dayanand and MCC Commissioner K. Harish Kumar were also present.
