ICAR-CPCRI for promoting coconut based products

Mangaluru, Sep 06, 2019: ICAR-CPCRI, Kasargod, as a part of “World Coconut Day” celebration, a district-level seminar on ‘Scientific Cultivation and Processing Technologies in Coconut’ organised a meeting.

The programme was organised by ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra and CPCRI in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture Development and Farmers Welfare, Kasargod district and Coconut Development Board, Kochi. Nearly 100 farmers who are members of coconut producers’ societies and coconut producers’ companies from all panchayats in the district participated in the event. This year’s theme was “Coconut for Family Wellness.”

On the occasion, ICAR-CPCRI Director-in-charge Dr K Muralidharan said that every year September 2 is celebrated as World Coconut Day to commemorate the formation day of Asian Pacific Coconut Community.

He said that India needs to develop and promote more value-added products to fetch additional income to coconut growers and compete in the international market. Integrated and community approach is needed to progress.

Mogral Puthur Gram Panchayat President A A Jaleel stressed that micro-irrigation and scientific cultivation are the two aspects for increasing production and productivity.

He stressed the importance of resource conservation to maintain ecological stability and sustainable development. He urged the public to involve in the water conservation campaign by joining the Jal Shakti Abhiyan programme being implemented in the district.

A publication on coconut cultivation technologies titled “Thengu Krishireethikal” in Malayalam was released during the occasion for the benefit of coconut farmers near by .

Talks on “Scientific Cultivation Technologies of Coconut,” “Management of Pests and Diseases in Coconut,” “Micro-irrigation and Water Conservation in Coconut Gardens for Doubling Income,” and “Technologies for Value Addition in Coconut” were held on the occasion. The talks benefitted local farmers and business.
