Healthy Living hailed in Int’l Senior Citizen’s Day

Udupi, Sep 26, 2011: With the assistance from the medical field the life span of people has been increasing. In the state the average life span is 68 – 69 years, but in Udupi district the life span is about 74 – 75 years. Among those live long, there are more women than men, said District Health Officer Dr. Ramachandra Bayari. He was speaking in the celebration program of the International Senior Citizens Day on Saturday, organized by District Health and Family Development department at District Hospital.
In the state, Senior Citizen’s Health Conservation program has been established in Udupi, Kolara, Chickmagalur, Thumkur and Shimoga districts. Under this program in the community centres, 2 days special clinics will be opened for the Senior Citizens. Also, in the district hospitals 10 beds will be reserved for the Senior Citizens, said Dr. Ramachandra.
 
Inaugurating the program Jilla Panchayath President Katapadi Shankara Poojary said that, the life span of the people has increased. But the joint families are getting reduced now and as a result the elderly parents of above 60 years have to live alone, this is unfortunate. For this reason the central government and the state government have organized Senior Citizen conservation program, he said.

MLA Raghupathi presided over the program. In his presidential address he said that, 4.5 crore rupees has been allotted for the District Hospital. Besides 1.90 crore rupees for the special treatment and for the Senior Citizens rupees 85 lakhs has been allotted, he said. Chief Guests present in the program were; Deputy Commissioner Dr. M.T. Reju, Hospital Development Committee President Pangala Rabindra Nayak and District Surgeon Chandrashekar Adiga. In the medical check up and treatment camp many Senior Citizens participated.
