Mangaluru, Nov 09,2018 : The Thirteenth Graduation Ceremony at St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru, was held on 9th November 2018 in the SJEC Open Air Stage. The ceremony witnessed the awarding of Graduation Certificates by the institution to the Class of 2018 comprising of 554 Undergraduates (BE), 85 Postgraduates (MBA, MCA and MTech) and 02 Doctoral Degrees. Dr S Christopher, (Former Secretary DD R&D and Chairman DRDO), Professor at IIT Madras, graced the occasion as Chief Guest and presented the degree certificates to the graduands. Mr Glen A L D’Souza, Employee Relations Head-General Electric, South Asia, was the Guest of Honour. Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore and President of SJEC, presided over the ceremony.
Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC, welcomed the graduands from the Class of 2018, dignitaries and parents to the Graduation Ceremony.
Mr Glen D’Souza, in his address urged the graduands to be leaders by being doers and achievers rather than being followers. He went on to say that the path ahead of the graduands will be exciting but also testing. He shared five qualities of successful leaders which included building strong relationships, following 7:1 rule which corresponds to 7 positives:1 constructive feedback, being clear about expectations, focusing on skills and being role models.
Dr Christopher congratulated the graduands for achieving this critical milestone of graduation with sheer hard work and effort. In his address, the Chief Guest said that knowledge is like a gold coin. He called upon everyone to invest in it and reap maximum benefits instead of hoping for temporary happiness. Dr Christopher advised all graduands to feel proud of their origin, roots and value systems. He also invited the gathering to be prepared for the testing times without losing focus.
Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC, administered the graduation oath. Mr Reyon Joseph Lobo, graduand from the Mechanical Engineering Department and Ms Prithvi V Shet, graduand from the Department of Computer Applications were the Valedictorians from the Class of 2018 and delivered the Valedictorian addresses.
Scholastic achievers and Sports achievers were recognized and awarded by Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore and President of SJEC. Delivering the Presidential Address, the Bishop congratulated the graduates and asked them to develop attitude of kindness and tenderness along with hard work and dedication. He also said that the institution has given a personality to the graduands which will help them succeed going forward. He also called upon the graduates to listen to their heart and carry forward the love in their hearts by always being connected.
Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director of SJEC and Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Chief of R&D at SJEC and were also present for the Ceremony. Dr Vincent Crasta, Head of the Department of Physics, and Ms Evita Coelho, Chairperson of SJEC Alumni Association, also felicitated the Graduates.
