Heavy rains pound Uttara Kannada; DK, Malnad get reprieve

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, May 30, 2025: While Uttara Kannada continued to witness heavy rain, coupled with gusty winds, there was some reprieve from rain in other two coastal districts and Malnad region on Thursday.

Many parts of Uttara Kannada, including Karwar, Honnavar and Kumta, experienced heavy downpour for several hours on Thursday morning. The sharp rain left the roads and the low-lying areas in Karwar inundated with rainwater.

A minor landslide was reported on NH 69 near Moogva in Honnavar taluk.

High tidal waves washed up a buoy installed near Devgad lighthouse on Ravindranath Tagore beach in Karwar.

Parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts received moderate to heavy rains intermittently. Udupi district, however, registered a record average rainfall of 70.5 cm from May 1 to 29, which is the highest for the month of May in the last 10 years.

Meanwhile, after pummelling Kodagu for the last four to five days, the intensity of rain has come down drastically on Thursday. But the hilly district is shivering under wet, chilly weather. Virajpet received a good spell of rain in the morning while Somwarpet and Madikeri experienced rain through the day intermittently.

Rivers and rivulets, including Cauvery, are still in spate. The water level in Harangi reservoir has reached 2,843.19 feet, just 16 feet short of reaching its full reservoir level. The weather department has forecast moderate rain and has declared a yellow alert for Kodagu on Friday. The district administration had announced a holiday for May 30 (Friday), after IMD had sounded a red alert, predicting heavy showers.

Bhagamandala recorded 130 mm of rain in the last 24 hours while Madikeri and Shantalli received 80 mm of rain each.

Rains have subsided in Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Shivamogga districts after days of incessant rainfall.

Up north, the people living in the villages located on the banks of Manjra and Bhima rivers in Bidar and Kalaburagi districts have heaved a sigh of relief after the water level in the waterbodies has receded. A flood-like situation prevailed in the districts in the last two days following heavy rains and discharges from Maharashtra dam.

Parts of Mumbai Karnataka and Kalyana Karnataka received spells of light to moderate showers on Thursday.
