Kochi, Apr 1, 2026: Malayalam director Ranjith was taken into police custody on Tuesday evening after a woman actor accused him of attempting to sexually assault her on a film set. The development has drawn attention as it adds to a series of allegations previously linked to the filmmaker.
According to police, the complaint was filed with Kochi City Police on Monday. The woman alleged that Ranjith lured her into a caravan during a shoot and tried to sexually assault her, prompting immediate action from authorities.

Taken into custody in Idukki
Police moved swiftly but discreetly following the complaint. Ranjith was picked up from Idukki district and is currently being held in Thodupuzha. Officials are expected to transfer him to Kochi for further proceedings.
The complainant’s statement was recorded at the Women’s Police Station on Monday, setting the legal process in motion. Authorities reportedly handled the matter with caution, keeping details under wraps to protect the woman involved.
Allegations linked to earlier reports
This is not the first time Ranjith’s name has surfaced in connection with allegations of misconduct. The director was previously mentioned in the Justice K Hema Committee report, which investigated harassment and abuse within the Malayalam film industry.
The report had painted a concerning picture of the industry, describing an environment where powerful individuals often avoid accountability. It also cited instances that caused fear and distress among those working in the space, with Ranjith’s name among those referenced.
Past complaint resurfaces
This is the third case against him, with the complainant, a young actress, alleging that the incident took place in January. Following the Hema Committee report, two complaints had earlier been filed against Ranjith — one by a woman and another by a man. In both cases, he had the criminal proceedings quashed by the court. Ranjith is now being brought to the magistrate’s residence. Late last night, he reportedly complained of uneasiness and was taken to the General Hospital in Ernakulam. From there, he is being produced before the magistrate.
The current case has also brought renewed focus to an older allegation. In 2024, a Bengali actress had filed a complaint with Kochi City Police, accusing Ranjith of inappropriate touching with sexual intent during the filming of Paleri Manikyam in 2009. Following that complaint, the director had sought anticipatory bail. However, the Kerala High Court later closed the plea after police indicated that the offence in question could be treated as bailable.
