Mangalore, September 18: A large number of devotees offered the final visarjana (immersion) pooja to the Sarvajanika idol of Lord Ganesha at Nehru Maidan, the last idol of Lord Ganesh to be immersed in Mangalore this season. The Hindu Yuva Sena consecrated the idol of Lord Ganesha.
The procession commenced at 7 p.m. from Nehru Maidan and reached the immersion spot in 6 hours. This grand procession featured a number of tableaux illustrating scenes from the puranas enacted by real drama and Yakshagana artistes. Besides live actors, the tableaux also had mechanical characters such as Garuda, Bheemasena, and others.
The tableaux were arranged by the members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Shri Rama Sene, Bajarag Dal, Hindu Yuva Sena, and other Hindu groups. The presence of folk dancers, musicians, and drummers added to the grandeur of the procession.
A fireworks show also formed part of the event. The crowd, which comprised women, children, and senior citizens, did not diminish in size even at midnight.
The police department had made all the required arrangements to maintain peace, law, and order during the procession, and the visarjana pooja.
