Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi Aug 3, 2012  : A shocking estimates shows that around 4 million people in India died during the year 1943 during the worst hit called as Bengal famine popularly called as ‘food Shortage”. The worrying cause of today is that the current rise in inflation is driven by high food prices.

The same was voiced on Thursday with The Marxist Leader Communist Party of India CPI (M) Udupi Taluk  Secretary P. Vishvanath Rai staging “Rasta Roko” before Taluk Office. Crucially, rice prices have risen by 20% and prices of certain lentils by 18%. Rice and lentils comprise the staple diet for many Indians.

He argued that unequal fragmentation has been done by the government for ascertaining  the BPL and APL.Sarcastically pointing out he showed that around 770 lakh tones of cereals go decayed every year in the warehouses clearly showing that its only wastage that outpasses the demand which comprises of only 500 lakh tones . A perfect 22% in excess.

A sure reluctance on part of the unwillingness to offer food to the starving people, he alleged. He said nearly 52 per cent of the populace in the country is incapable of earning a minimum of Rs 20 per day. The government should assure a kilogram of rice or wheat at the cost of Rs 2 and it should provide up to 35 kilograms of rice or wheat per month. He accused that government is offering the facilities of tax deduction amounting up to Rs 5 lakhs crores to the corporate owners and has no fund to assure food security, he added. He also demanded that the government should implement the recommendations made in the report by Swaminathan Committee to protect the interest of poor people, farmers and also labourers. The government should also take steps on controlling price inflation, an annoyance of today.
