Mangalore, December 31: The bygone year 2009 was a year of diverse happenings for Mangalore. While many local developments were positive, a few unfortunate incidents put Mangalore in the national media spotlight and earned a bad name for the city. We present here a few important highlights of the Year 2009.


JANUARY 2009


Ponnuraj5 - V Ponnuraj takes charge as Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner.

12 - Air India Express launched daily night-flight services between Dubai and Mangalore

14 - K K Pai, the former Chairman and Managing Director of the Syndicate Bank, passed away.

FEBRUARY 2009



6 - Manjeshwar MLA C H Kunhabbu’s daughter Shruthi, a II PUC student in St Aloysius college was abducted by Hindu outfit members for having spoken to her friend’s brother belonging to other community.

11 - Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare Renuka Chowdhury was issued a notice by MCC Mayor for her statements that ‘Mangalore has been Talibanised’ and that ‘there is a clean communal divide in Mangalore where a Hindu girl is prevented from talking to a Muslim boy in Mangalore’.

APRIL 2009

11 - Gandhian, veteran litterateur, three time MLA B M Idinabba passes away.

11 - Rev Fr Lawrence D’Souza (76) from Mulky, popularly known as ‘UNESCO Father’, passes away.

26 -UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi addresses election rally in Mangalore.

30 - Lok Sabha elections held; 74.33 pc polling in DK-the highest in the State.


MAY 2009


BJP wins

16 – BJP won again in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency with Nalin Kumar Kateel and D V Sadananda Gowda defeating Veteran Congress Leader Janardhan Poojary and Jayaprakash Hegde respectively.


JUNE 2009



9 - 62 students in a Muslim Residential School at Natekal fell ill consuming school food. 

9 - First case of swine flu reported in Mangalore.


JULY 2009



5 - Rowdy-sheeter Vamanjoor Rohi alias Vamanjur Rohidas Shetty was brutally murdered.

14 - P Jayarama Bhat has taken charge as Managing Director and CEO of Karnataka Bank Ltd. Ananthakrishna became Ex-officio Chairman.

24 - Extension of Mangalore- Bangalore train to Kannur announced.

AUGUST 2009



1 - The cargo handling workers in NMPT workers goes on strike against the implementation of award of the National Industrial Tribunal, for the new manning scale and deployment of workers in various departments.

OCTOBER 2009



1 - Aerofest-2009 kicks off in Manipal
