NEET UG 2026 re-test: DK records more students scoring above 600 despite dip in top ranks

Mangaluru, Jul 18, 2026: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has declared the results of the NEET UG 2026 re-test, with more than 11.20 lakh candidates qualifying nationwide.

Students from educational institutions in Dakshina Kannada (DK) have once again delivered an impressive performance. While the number of top-ranked students has dipped slightly compared to last year, the district recorded a significant rise in the number of candidates scoring above 600 marks.

This year, 5,570 students from Dakshina Kannada registered for the examination, of whom 4,343 appeared. Karnataka continues to have the highest number of MBBS seats in the country. For the 2026–27 academic year, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has increased MBBS seats across India, with Karnataka receiving a substantial share, improving admission prospects for students in the state.

Education experts said the sharp increase in 600-plus scorers reflects the strong overall performance of students. However, they noted that the number of candidates securing top ranks was lower than last year, when the district produced more high-ranking achievers.

According to experts, the decline in top rankings can be attributed to multiple factors. Following the question paper leak in the original NEET UG examination, the NTA conducted a re-test, leaving many coaching institutes with limited time to prepare students effectively.

They also pointed out that the re-test coincided with the commencement of II PUC classes, making it difficult for institutions to conduct focused coaching sessions. Additionally, many students were reluctant to undergo another phase of intensive preparation after already appearing for the original examination. Experts believe these factors ultimately impacted the district’s performance in the top ranks.
