Mangalore, Aug 20, 2013: The fishermen community along with their religious leaders offered Samudra Pooja at Tannirbavi, on August 20, Tuesday.
Sri Sandhyanath Swamiji of Kadri Sri Kshetra Suvarna Kadali Mutt performed the Pooja and offered milk, coconuts and flowers to the Sea in the presence of State Minister for Textiles and Ports Baburao Chinchansur and MLA Mangalore South Constituency J R Lobo.
The community people offered pooja to the sea to remain calm and look after the safety of their family heads who go to the fishing expedition.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA J R Lobo said the fishing community is highly dependent on the sea who provides them with fish which helps them to lead their day to day life. Once in a year the fishermen community offering pooja to the sea seeking blessings is a beautiful tradition, he added.
He also said that Mangalore port is not safe as of now and that the accumulated silt was leading to accidents. He stressed the need to undertake dredging on a regular basis.
Minister Baburao Chinchansur assured the fishermen to work for the development of the Mangalore port. Fishermen community is very hard working community and government will work for their welfare, he said
