In his inaugural speech, prominent artist Mr. Ganesh Somayyaji said that the artists as well as the media had a significant role to play in creating social awareness of issues such as environment degradation and displacement.

The paintings were all based on the theme of environmental degradation and displacement caused by projects such as MSEZ. The artists, under the leadership of Mr. Somayyaji, actually visited the villages that are being threatened by the MSEZ and gained inspiration by interacting with the villagers.

Vasanth Rao, an artist from Udupi, said that the plight of the villages moved him so much that he actually used the soil from the villages in his painting.
