Mangalore, Feb 21, 2012 : Dr. U. S. Mohandas Nayak, a widely acclaimed dental surgeon in Mangalore, died on Feb 20 Monday at 10:15 p.m. He was 76.
Known as the Bhishma Pitamaha of dentistry, he was among the pioneers of dentistry in Mangalore, having set up Nayak’s Dental Clinic at Nandigudda in the early sixties.

Dr. Nayak got his Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Government Dental College in Madras in 1959, following which he served as a dental surgeon in Government Wenlock Hospital from 1960 to 1972.
As a reader in dental surgery at Kasturba Medical College in 1960 – 74, he was an expert of almost all the dentalcare techniques. The fellowship of the International College of Dentists was conferred on him in recognition of his outstanding services to society. Dr. Nayak was among the previous presidents of the Indian Dental Association.
Dr. Nayak has left behind his wife Indira Nayak and two sons Prof. Dr. U. S. Krishna Nayak, the dean (academics) at AB Shetty Institute of Dental Sciences, and Dr. U. S. Deepa Nayak,
