Mangalore, April 24: The 40-day Lenten Season and the Holy Week comprising Maundy Thursday and Good Friday culminated in grand Easter celebrations for Mangalorean Christians. Holy Mass was celebrated in churches all over Mangalore on the evening of April 23, Saturday.
Christians celebrate the joyful resurrection of Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, which is celebrated all over the world. Just before the festive mass, the faithful sit in darkness and wait for the parish priests to light Easter Candles from the “new fire.” The “new fire” and the candle is then taken in a short procession along the aisle while parishioners light candles from the flame, filling the entire church with candlelight.
Although the festive Easter Mass is celebrated on the evening of Saturday, Holy Masses are also held in churches on the morning of Easter Sunday for the convenience of those who cannot attend on Saturday.
