New Delhi, Feb 25, 2012 : The Sitaram Jindal Foundation conferred the Jindal Prize and the S. R. Jindal Prize on several prominent personalities, including Justice Santhosh Hegde, Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr. Veerendra Heggade, Anna Hazare, and Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalaam at a glittering awards ceremony held on Feb 23 Thursday in New Delhi. A total prize pool of Rs. 7.30 crore was distributed among them.

Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalaam (science and technology), Justice Santhosh Hegde (social development), Dr. Veerendra Hegde (drugless healing), DHAN Foundation of Madurai (rural development and poverty alleviation), and Rishi Valley Education Centre at Chittor (AP) (moral education) were given a purse of Rs. 1 crore each.

The award winners were honored by Shri Shri Ravishankar while Tejendra Khanna, the lieutenant governor of Delhi, who was the guest of honor on the occasion, gave away the prizes.

These prizes are given away in appreciation and recognition of services rendered by institutions and individuals for social welfare.

Lala Mange Ram Agarwal received the honorary S. R. Jindal Prize for his service to society.

Anna Hazare; Utthan of Allahabad; Sankara Eye Care Institutions India of Coimbatore; and Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission of Barrackpore; and others received five S. R. Jindal Prizes worth Rs. 25 lakh each.

Tehelka; Manish Sisodia of New Delhi; Dr. Rajinder K. Singla of Chandigarh; Manjunath Shanmugam; Ramesh Verma of Hissar; Shehla Masood of Bhopal; Dr. Ashok Khemka and Sanjiv Chaturvedi; Rajnikanth Borele and Ajay B. Bose; and Pawan Kumar Chaudhury and Atul Kumar received nine S. R. Jindal Prizes worth Rs. 10 lakh each.

Three posthumous gallantry awards were conferred on Tukaram Omble, Maj Sandeep Unnikrishnan, and Mohan Chand Sharma for their fight against terrorism.

Sitaram Jindal Foundation, which was established in 1969, is a non religious, apolitical, and charitable trust, focusing on education, social service, health, and others. The foundation extends financial support to charities, sets up educational institutions and hospitals, and gives away scholarships to deserving students.
