Mangalore, July 8, 2013 : The failure of the police department to file a charge sheet in the Vittal Malekudiya case even a year after the incident, came under criticism at the SC/ST Grievance Redressal meet held at SP office on July 7, Sunday.
Dalit leader Shekhar of Belthangady pointed out that Vittal and his father Linganna were released in June 2012, four months after their arrest on charges of having links with Naxals. He demanded that the police either file a charge sheet or a ‘B’ report in the court.
Responding to the complaint, SP Abhishek Goel said there are several cases for which charge sheets have not been filed. But in this case the department has prepared a charge sheet and has submitted the same to the government. Once the government approves, the charge sheet would be filed, he said.
He also alleged that the Naxal affected areas have not seen much development despite the release of Rs 5 crore under special package. The SP said 30 per cent of the works are complete and added 55 per cent of the works are yet to begin.
He said 21 youth of Naxal affected areas have been identified for training in Home Guards and once government approves the same, their services will be utilized towards traffic regulation in Bantwal, Puttur and Belthangady.
Child labour ?Incidentally, a boy from a canteen who served tea and biscuits to the participants of the meeting, seemed not above 14 years and when enquired out of curiosity by people present there, he said he was from Puttur and worked only on Sundays and was not to be seen later.
